Welcome to Curlew, Washington's Renaissance Faire. The third-annual, two-day event is presented by the King of Caerleon’s Parish of Curlew from the Realms of Avalon, and brings to life the entertainment and customs of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance (1350-1450). Visitors to the faire are encouraged to join in the revels and wear their own medieval or Renaissance attire and costumes (twenty-first century garb is also welcome).
Saturday, August 19, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The day begins with the opening of the new King and Queen's court, followed by combat tournaments, demonstrations, and workshops in shinai, waster, rapier, and live steel, as well as archery (longbow and crossbow). Faire attendees are invited to test their skills in archery practice runs, prior to the Archery Point Bearing Tournament. Caerleon’s Needlework and Fiber Guild will offer demonstrations and exhibits of both period and modern dyes and colors, as well exhibitions of ancient crafts from the Viking era to Elizabethan times.
Don't miss taking an Instant Character Portrait of yourself using the King Arthur and Queen Guinevere’s period-clothing, stand-up forms; being tossed into the stocks and pillories; or paying to see a villager of Curlew arrested and locked up (and receiving a photo of the poor unfortunate). For a $1, all-day "BIG HUNT" license fee, children may search the faire site for a masked animal, tag him, have his license punched, and receive a prize upon completing the hunt.
As the sun sets, the day's live games and children's activities will conclude with a potluck dinner theater performance of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost, directed by Richard Wilkie (Lil‘ Wolf) and performed by community actors. Theater tickets may be purchased for $5 at the door the day of the performance. Attendees may bring a potluck dish or pay a $2.00 fee for the feast. Organizers ask that you bring your own "feast ware."
Sunday, August 20, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday's activites revolve around an archery prize tournament, named “THE CRUSADE,” as inspired by the movie Kingdom of Heaven. Tournament participants must sign-in at the gate, pay a $1 entry fee, and draw for positions as Knight Templars or Syrian Muslims and face your enemy at the City Walls of Jerusalem. Please bring your own bow (35# or less) and arrows. You may also rent a quiver of arrows for $1. The competion will conclude in the afternoon, with a Closing Court where honors and tokens of the event will be awarded.
A return performance of Love's Labour's Lost will be held on Sunday afternoon.
